1. TransitWorks Fights to Improve Transit through Bridge Tolls

TransitWorks, an exciting new collaboration of Bay Area transit unions, has been working to support SB 916 - Senator Perata's proposal to raise Bay Area bridge tolls to support transit and relieve congestion.  In July we distributed over 10,000 support postcards that urge Senator Perata not to change the current list of projects! If you can pick up postcards from the TALC office, it's not too late to distribute them to friends and coworkers.
You can also send an insta-fax to Senator Perata, and see downloads of sample letters, factsheets, and sample resolutions of support at: www.transitworks.org.

2. Transportation for a Livable Region (TLR) Report and Release Event Coming This Fall

We are finalizing the platform of recommendations for TLR! The final draft will be available for review by mid-September, and the full report will be available for review by early October.  Thanks to everyone who has already reviewed the list of projects and programs - if you haven't yet, there is still time to get your opinion in before we finalize the platform!
You can learn more about TLR or view the list at: www.transcoalition.org/c/sus_tlr/tlr_home.html.

TLR will culminate in November with an exciting new report, and we want to make sure it gets the attention it deserves from media, decision-makers, and elected officials.  For that reason, we're planning a day-long event that will involve Coalition members, intrigue regional and local media, and inspire participants - Circle the Bay on Transit
For more information about this event, and what you can do to help, go to: www.transcoalition.org/c/sus_tlr/tlr_home.html.

3. TALC Wins First Step in Contra Costa Measure C Reauthorization
Thanks to the energy and commitment of the many activists who were involved, we won an important first step! On July 23, CCTA voted to pursue three alternative plans for environmental study in the Measure C reauthorization. Of those three, one is very similar to the Transportation for a Livable Contra Costa County platform endorsed by TALC and nearly 40 other public interest groups. But the fight is just beginning!"

4. Bus Rapid Transit -- Coming Soon to San Francisco?
Over the next few months, TALC will be working to build support for a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) network in San Francisco. TALC will be offering presentations on the benefits of BRT, and will place a special emphasis on reaching organizations that serve some of SF's lowest-income neighborhoods.

5. TALC supports the SF Sales Tax Extension
At its July meeting, TALC lent strong, unanimous support for the San Francisco sales tax extension (November ballot).  The plan nearly reflects the ideal of what the plans should contain.  Instead of glamorous but ineffective "ribbon-cutting" projects, the SF Transportation Authority is providing core funding for their core systems, and new transportation choices with safer walking and biking, and a better link to land use.  Caltrain extended into a rebuilt Transbay Terminal, and a Bus Rapid Transit Network, also get a tremendous boost. TALC will work to gather more support for the initiative.

Inclusionary Housing in California: 30 Years of Innovation
A report by: Non-Profit Housing Association of Northern California (NPH)

One-hundred-seven (107) cities and counties in California are part of an explosive trend in the adoption of a housing strategy, called inclusionary housing, that has the potential to double affordable housing production statewide, according to the report. The report summarizes findings of a survey of all 525 jurisdictions, and reports that 62 percent of the 107 cities and counties have recently adopted inclusionary housing programs, which are sets of policies that seek to ensure a portion of new residential developments are reserved for lower income households. * Learn more at the NPH website: http://www.nonprofithousing.org/index.atomic

Transportation Costs and the American Dream: Why a Lack of Transportation Choices Strains the Family Budget and Hinders Home Ownership
A report by: Surface Transportation Policy Project (STPP)

Transportation is the second largest annual expense for American families, adding up to more than three times the cost of health care, and exceeded only by housing as an expenditure. For lower-income families, the expense of transportation poses an even greater burden, inhibiting wealth creation, hindering home ownership, and dangerously straining already tight family budgets. This new report outlines this issue and ranks 28 major metropolitan areas by the amount of the family budget devoted to daily transportation costs.  * Read more: http://www.transact.org/report.asp?id=224
