Help support transit and housing choices in the Bay Area!
MTC is now considering a policy that will require cities and counties to plan for transit-supportive growth in station areas before releasing funds for new transit expansion projects. TALC calls these station areas “transit opportunity zones.” MTC will provide funding to cities to plan these zones. We are calling on MTC and the Joint Policy Committee (JPC) advising MTC to include strong and specific standards that will create livable, walkable communities in these zones.

Help TALC and EBBC kick off the new regional Safe Routes to Transit Program!
What do you need to make your trip to transit by foot or by bike safer? We want to know! Regional Measure 2, the $1 bridge toll increase that voters passed in March, included $20 million for a new Safe Routes to Transit grant program. Join TALC and the East Bay Bicycle Coalition (EBBC) on Wednesday February 9th from 9am until noon at the MetroCenter (101 8th St, at the Lake Merritt BART station) to hear about the new program and to help us decide what types of projects will be eligible for funding in our first call for projects!

Free trainings, technical assistance, and how-to Guide on winning transportation improvements

For community groups in the Bay Area's low-income and people-of-color communities, TALC is now offering free trainings for leaders and volunteers, free technical assistance to help you win the transportation your community needs, and a free Access Now! guide as a resource.

Trainings cover a “Who's Who” of transportation decision makers and help you identify the best opportunities to win the transportation changes you need. Trainings are typically two hours, are individually tailored to your group’s situation and issues. Trainings and Technical Assistance are available in Spanish; for Trainings, we can arrange for translation for other languages as well. TALC can also give a brief presentation as part of your organization's regular meeting.

We will be mailing out hundreds of the new Access Now! guides in January or February, to TALC Member and Affiliate Groups and to community leaders in low-income and people-of-color communities. A Spanish version of the guide will be available later in the spring.

To make sure you get an Access Now! guide, or to request Trainings or Technical Assistance, call Jeff Hobson at 510-740-3102 or (starting in January) TALC's new TEACH Program Director Emily Rogers at 510-740-3109, email us at access@transcoalition.org, or see www.transcoalition.org/access. For inquiries in Spanish, call Sandra Padilla at 510-740-3104.

New staff join TALC’s TEACH project

TALC recently bid a sad farewell to Sita Chokkalingam, who headed up our Transportation Equity And Community Health (TEACH) project during the past two years. Sita developed a repetitive strain injury which made it impossible for her to continue working at TALC. We will miss her and wish her well on her path to recovery.

TALC recently hired two new people who we are excited to welcome. Emily Rogers is the new Director of the TEACH Program. She comes to TALC as the outgoing Executive Secretary of San Francisco's Department of the Environment. For 3½ years Emily oversaw a project helping to develop a community plan for Bayview/Hunters Point, including a whole range of transportation issues. She will oversee our new Access Now! training program (see above) and will conduct outreach in Richmond regarding access to health.

Sandra Padilla is the new TEACH Outreach Coordinator, and will focus her efforts in central and eastern Contra Costa County. Born in Guatemala, Sandra is a native Spanish speaker and has done both oral and written translation for other organizations. She is extremely dedicated to transportation and social justice. Additionally, Sandra will work with Amber Crabbe on the Safe Routes to Transit program.

Save the date: TALC's 8th annual summit on April 9, 2005
Join TALC on April 9th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm for our 8th annual summit. (Registration will begin at 9:30 am.) Although the program hasn't been set yet, as with TALC's previous summits this will be a don't miss event for TALC's diverse constituents, supporters, and activists. Everyone who wants to help create a more sustainable and socially just Bay Area should save the date!

Happy holidays, and please remember TALC at the end of the year

TALC wishes you and your loved ones a happy, healthy, and safe holiday season and best wishes for the New Year.

And while we're on the subject ... we also wish that you'll remember TALC as you consider your end of the year charitable contributions!

TALC is doing vitally important work to create a sustainable and socially just Bay Area, but funding for this type of work is increasingly difficult to obtain. We greatly appreciate any one-time donations or recurring monthly donation. Any amount helps, and we’ll work to stretch your dollar as far as possible.

Our new online donation service – powered by Groundspring.org – makes supporting TALC’s work easier than ever, and completely secure.

    Please give today at: https://secure.groundspring.org/dn/index.php?aid=3319

And please have a happy holiday season and happy new year!
