New Report Details
Benefits of Transit Villages -- Campaign Launched
On November 12, TALC released a new report
entitled,
It
Takes a Transit Village, which kicked off a campaign calling on the
Metropolitan Transportation Commission to condition over $12 billion of new
transit investments on cities approving significant housing and designing
walkable communities around existing and future transit stations. Cities that
want to continue putting big-box retail and regional malls in these “Transit
Opportunity Zones” would no longer be eligible to receive regional funding for
transit expansions, if MTC agrees to the policy. The report shows that this
form of smarter planning could save taxpayers and commuters $1.8 billion per
year.

Contra Costa Residents Set
Priorities for Increasing Access to Health Care
In October 2004, TALC held two community forums,
in Concord's Monument Corridor and in Bay Point/Pittsburg, to discuss
transportation barriers to healthcare and prioritize possible solutions. At
each forum, more than 40 community residents and staff from health and transit
agencies came together and shared information about the problems residents
face in getting to health care, what agencies are doing to address those
problems, and the challenges to improving access. TALC staff outlined a range
of potential solutions for improving access to area clinics and hospitals.
Everyone then prioritized among the possible solutions, and the
results are available online. To follow up on the forums,
working groups will be meeting starting on November 30, for those who are
interested in participating.

Bay Area Voters
Support Transportation Choices, Reject Road Measures
On November 2, Bay Area voters passed over $4.5
billion in transportation measures, embracing plans that support a broad range
of transportation choices to help people get out of their cars and rejecting
plans that were too focused on building highways. Voters showed the strongest
support for county sales taxes that developed a political consensus among
major stakeholders through lengthy and inclusive public processes.

Become a TALC Supporter
TALC is doing vitally important work to create a
sustainable and socially just Bay Area, but funding for this type of work is
increasingly difficult to obtain. We are asking supporters to help with a
small recurring monthly donation. Any amount helps, and we’ll work to stretch
your dollar as far as possible. Here are some examples:
$5 per month (16 cents per day) will enable TALC
to print and distribute 25 more copies of It Takes a Transit Village,
our newest report.
$10 per month (33 cents per day) will cover the
cost of sending a delegation to Sacramento to attend hearings on future state
legislation.
$15 per month (50 cents per day) will provide a
month’s stipend for a summer Transportation Justice intern.
Please consider giving a recurring donation. Our
new online donation service -- powered by Groundspring.org -- makes supporting
TALC’s work easier than ever, and completely secure.

MTC Meetings
MTC has released its draft Regional
Transportation Plan (known as “Transportation 2030”). Please save the
dates below for MTC’s public workshops/hearings. You can comment on the draft
plan at any of these forums, and a light meal will be provided. TALC will be
emailing more information about these events soon, but the primary emphasis
will be on supporting TALC’s Smart Growth policy proposal, as outlined in the
It Takes a Transit Village report.
