    Attend TALC's regional meeting -- February 16th, 5:30 PM

Wednesday, February 16, 5:30-7:30 pm. (Orientation for new attendees from 5:00-5:30.) Sierra Club, 85 2nd Street, San Francisco.

Items on the agenda include HOT lanes (High Occupancy Toll lanes) and TALC's strategic plan. We will have pro and con speakers and a discussion of what TALC's position on HOT lanes should be. This discussion will feed into TALC's strategic planning process and will be used in our work to help shape MTC's HOT lane proposals. We will also gather feedback on TALC's strategic plan, which is nearing completion.

Save the date: TALC's 8th annual Summit on April 9, 2005
Join TALC on April 9th for our 8th annual Summit. This will be a don't miss event for TALC's constituents, supporters, and activists. Be a part of the movement for a more sustainable and socially just Bay Area. Save the date!

    Support livable communities

MTC is now considering a policy that is a long-time goal of TALC's: requiring cities and counties to plan for transit-supportive land use within a half-mile radius of transit centers before funds are released for new transit expansion projects. While applauding MTC for this initiative, TALC is concerned that their current proposal, which simply sets housing and job thresholds, is not enough. Our coalition is calling on MTC to include strong and specific standards that will create livable, walkable communities in these areas. If you haven't already done so, please sign on to our Livable Communities Platform, and send a letter today.

Funding is needed to complete the Bay Bridge Pathway to SF

The new East Span of the Bay Bridge will include a pathway for cyclists, pedestrians, and Caltrans maintenance activities, regardless of the design that is ultimately selected. TALC is joining with the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition (SFBC), Bay Area Bicycle Coalition, and others in asking state and regional leaders to fund completion of the pathway from Treasure Island to San Francisco. Relative to the cost of the East Span Replacement, adding a pathway to the existing West Span is a bargain and would have multiple benefits for Bay Area commuters of all modes. Visit the SFBC website for up-to-date information and an online form for easily sending a letter to MTC. Please take action today!

Help TALC and EBBC kick off the new regional Safe Routes to Transit program!
What do you need to make your trip to transit by foot or by bike safer? We want to know! Regional Measure 2, the $1 bridge toll increase, which voters passed in March, included $20 million for a new Safe Routes to Transit grant program. Join TALC and the East Bay Bicycle Coalition (EBBC) on Wednesday, February 25th, from 12:30-5:00pm at the MetroCenter, 101 8th Street (at the Lake Merritt BART station) to hear about the new program and to help us decide what types of projects will be eligible for funding in our first call for projects! Note the date and time change from the last newsletter.

Access Now! guides now available -- plus free trainings and technical assistance

For community groups in the Bay Area's low-income and people-of-color communities, TALC is now offering free trainings for leaders and volunteers, free technical assistance to help you win the transportation your community needs, and a free Access Now! guide as a resource.

Trainings cover a “Who's Who” of transportation decision makers and help you identify the best opportunities to win the transportation changes you need. Trainings are typically two hours and are individually tailored to your group’s situation and issues. Trainings and technical assistance are available in Spanish. For trainings, we can arrange for translation to other languages. TALC can also give a brief presentation as part of your organization's regular meeting. A Spanish version of the guide will be available shortly.

To make sure you get an Access Now! guide, or to request Trainings or Technical Assistance, call TALC's new TEACH Program Director Emily Rogers at 510-740-3109 or Jeff Hobson at 510-740-3102, email us at access@transcoalition.org, or see www.transcoalition.org/access. For inquiries in Spanish, call Sandra Padilla at 510-740-3104.

Member groups voted for TALC's Board of Directors, and the results of the December election are in. We welcome new Board members Jeremy Nelson, Policy Director for Transportation for a Livable City, and Roxanne Sanchez, President of the SEIU Local 790 BART Chapter. In addition, representatives of the following organizations were reelected to the Board: BayRail Alliance (Margaret Okuzumi), Non-Profit Housing Association of Northern California (Geeta Rao), and the Sierra Club (Dick Schneider).
