Marta Lindsey has taken on the role of Membership and Development Director, and is the "point person" for TALC's Member and Affiliate Group representatives. As Community Planning Associate, Joel Ramos is leading TALC's community outreach to support implementation of Bus Rapid Transit and transit-oriented development in East Oakland. TALC's position on November ballot propositions
Strong Yes on Proposition 1C: Housing and Smart Growth Bond. TALC is strongly supporting Proposition 1C on the November ballot. This $2.85 billion bond would continue state funding for affordable housing production, and it includes a new $850 million fund for infill and supportive investments and $300 million for Transit-Oriented Development. Volunteer, get your group signed on, or donate now at www.homes4ca.org

Strong No! on Prop 90, "The Taxpayer Trap Initiative". Proposition 90 on the November 2006 ballot is a constitutional amendment that would make it nearly impossible to create and enforce laws and regulations on a wide variety of issues: land use, transportation, housing, and the environment. Well-funded real-estate interests are pushing this initiative, similar to Oregon's devastating "Measure 37", as part of an effort to roll-back regulations around the country. Get active at www.noprop90.com

TALC currently has no position on either transportation bond. TALC’s Board of Directors will reconsider the issue in September, once more member groups have solidified their own positions.

Celebrate progress on improving access to health in Contra Costa – September 23
Since 2003, TALC's Transportation Equity And Community Health (TEACH) Program has worked to improve transportation access to health care facilities in two low-income Contra Costa County communities: the Monument Corridor in Concord and Bay Point/Pittsburg. TEACH's community organizing -- which brought together community members with transportation and health agency representatives -- has won real improvements, and now it's time to celebrate!

Whether you helped with the project or would just like to learn more, you are invited to join TEACH Working Group members and allies for "A Celebration of Changes in Transportation Access" on Saturday, September 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Meadow Homes Park in Concord. Share good food and company, view our asset maps and displays from the program, and chat with these community advocates about their experiences. For more details, contact Sandra Padilla at sandra@transcoalition.org or 510-740-3150 x14.

Urban Ecology advances vision for East Bay Greenway
Unlike the Ohlone Greenway, which parallels BART tracks from Berkeley to El Cerrito, the BART corridor from East Oakland to Fremont offers extremely limited open space, pedestrian and bicycling amenities, and connections to neighborhood facilities. A unique window of opportunity for corridor improvements has opened with BART investing over $1.3 billion in seismic upgrades to its system. The vital retrofit project will ensure rider safety, but should also strive to have positive impacts in the communities through which it cuts. A multi-use greenway that offers trails, bike paths, and other amenities would serve as a perfect complement to this larger capital project.

Urban Ecology intends to be the catalyst for the East Bay Greenway. UE's conceptual plan will offer a community vision for a multi-use path from Oakland to Fremont, as well as a funding plan to ensure implementation (Measure AA bond money funding BART’s retrofit project cannot be used on the East Bay Greenway). This project is ambitious and challenging, but Urban Ecology is well positioned to make it a reality. For more information about the East Bay Greenway or to offer your support, please contact Urban Ecology's Project Coordinator, Phil Olmstead, at (415) 617-0168.
