We need your help today! Contact the Governor now to sign AB 2444
AB 2444, the first bill TALC has ever sponsored, has passed the Legislature! Please join us in telling the Governor that he needs to sign the legislation to help tackle our transportation and environmental challenges in the Bay Area. The Governor could have this bill on his desk in less than a week, so contact him today! If signed, AB 2444 would mean up to 60 million new dollars a year to fund air and water quality improvements and congestion management -- including public transit operations and pedestrian and bicycle safety.

Call the Governor's office at 916-445-2841. Press 1 for English, then 2 to voice an opinion, then 0 to speak to someone in the Governor's office. Tell the staffer your name and which organization, if any, you represent. Say "I want the Governor to sign AB 2444. AB 2444 lets the Bay Area solve our own transportation and environmental challenges."

Please take action now before reading the rest of this newsletter!

TALC meeting on housing the future - September 20
You're invited to attend TALC's September regional meeting, featuring an engaging presentation by Don Weden, a retired senior planner with Santa Clara County. He will discuss the major economic, demographic, development, and environmental trends and challenges that the Bay Area faces, and why these trends are closely connected to decisions about how and where we house people. We will take time to strategize how we can increase the scale and impact of our efforts in dealing with these challenges, including finding better ways to communicate about the quality-of-life issues at stake in a way that really connects with people.

Wednesday, September 20, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Sierra Club, 85 2nd Street, San Francisco. (Optional orientation with background on TALC for new attendees from 5:00-5:30.) Pizza and beverages will be served. Please RSVP so that we order enough food. If you have questions about the meeting, contact Marta Lindsey at marta@transcoalition.org.

TALC supports SMART rail ballot measure
TALC is pleased to announce its support for the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit proposal, which is Measure R on the November 2006 ballot. Approval by two-thirds of voters would create 70 miles of commuter rail line and an accompanying 70 miles of bicycle and pedestrian trail that would reach from Cloverdale to the Larkspur Ferry. TALC's Carli Paine will be lending a hand to the grassroots campaign. To learn how you can help visit the campaign website.

TALC welcomes two new members groups
TALC would like to welcome our two newest member organizations. The Leadership Institute for Ecology and the Economy is based in Sonoma County and works to educate future and current leaders, as well as the local community, on the need to integrate environmental, economic, and social equity issues. CarFreeCity, USA promotes car-free development that enhances local and global environmental quality, improves personal health, and fosters a sense of community -- simply by minimizing the use of cars.

Celebrate progress on improving access to health in Contra Costa - September 23
Since 2003, TALC's Transportation Equity And Community Health (TEACH) Program has worked to improve transportation access to health care facilities in two low-income Contra Costa County communities: the Monument Corridor in Concord and Bay Point/Pittsburg. TEACH's community organizing -- which brought together community members with transportation and health agency representatives -- empowered the communities on this issue and resulted in tremendous access improvements. Now it's time to celebrate!

Whether you helped with the project or would just like to learn more, you are invited to join TEACH Working Group members and allies for "A Celebration of Changes in Transportation Access" on Saturday, September 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Meadow Homes Park in Concord. Share good food and company, view our maps and displays from the program, and chat with these community advocates about their experiences. For more details, contact Sandra Padilla at sandra@transcoalition.org or 510-740-3150 x14.
