Two weeks left to register for TALC's Summit -- Saturday, March 24
Registration for this year’s Summit is filling faster than ever. Register today to make sure you don’t miss out!

With transportation responsible for half of the Bay Area’s greenhouse gas emissions, driving less is the single biggest way to reduce our climate impact. TALC's 10th Annual Summit on Saturday, March 24 will advance the movement to turn the tide on sprawl and create a region of walkable neighborhoods connected by fast, convenient transit. Plenary speakers include Assemblywoman Loni Hancock, Chair of the Natural Resources Committee, and Michel Gelobter of Redefining Progress. Speakers and breakout sessions will show how we can advance environmental, social equity, and quality-of-life goals while helping to cool the planet. Please join us at the Summit to get involved, strategize, network, and hone your advocacy skills in the movement for a more sustainable and socially just Bay Area.

Tell the legislature to protect public transit!
The Governor's proposed budget for California would raid more than $1.1 billion for public transit while permanently terminating an important source of funding for transit operations. The good news is that our legislators can reject these cuts and help protect future funding for transit. TALC is teaming up with environmental groups, social justice organizations, transit riders and workers, and others to convince legislators that slashing public transit is sure to increase traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions. We need your voice to help persuade legislators to protect public transit!

  • Sign the petition asking your state representative to "keep transit on track!"

  • Get your organization to sign on to our message to the legislature.

  • Join our Sacramento Lobby Day on Tuesday, March 20 as we talk with legislators and their staff about the importance of public transit funding. To participate, please contact Carli Paine at carli@transcoalition.org or 510-740-3150 x315.

High Speed Rail picks up speed
The California High-Speed Rail Authority released updated ridership numbers last week. The new model projects at least 86 million passengers per year. For more information on the ridership forecasts, see the Authority's press release. There’s also a great new ten-minute educational video about HSR on the Authority’s website. TALC members are invited to join the Association for California High-Speed Trains on its March 27 lobby day to ask the legislature to fully fund public transit and fund the continued activities of the California High-Speed Rail Authority. For more information or to sign-up to participate, contact jlthompson@nossaman.com.

Critical regional transportation campaign kicks off!
TALC recently launched a new campaign to ensure that the 2009 Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) focuses on increasing accessibility and reducing driving and greenhouse gas emissions. The RTP is significant because it’s the Metropolitan Transportation Commission’s 25-year, $100 billion blueprint for how transportation funding is allocated in the Bay Area. We’re excited to work with groups and individuals throughout the region over the next two years to ensure the RTP advances our common goal of a more sustainable and socially just Bay Area.

Your involvement is essential to win an RTP that takes climate change seriously and is chock full of funds for transit, smart growth, bike/ped infrastructure, and Lifeline services. The first strategizing for the campaign took place at TALC’s February Regional Meeting (see the link to the meeting minutes below). The next opportunity to get involved is at TALC’s Summit on March 24th where you can help flesh out our shared RTP platform at the “Connecting TALC’s Work to Global Warming” session. Contact Marta, TALC’s RTP Coordinator, at marta@transcoalition.org or 510-740-3150 x321 for more information and to get involved.

Great Communities Collaborative launches toolkit and new website
Want to support transit-oriented development (TOD) in the Bay Area? As a part of the Great Communities Collaborative, TALC released a new Great Communities Toolkit to take you on a step-by-step process for how to win TOD. The Collaborative also has a great new website, including the toolkit, at www.greatcommunities.org. Both the website and toolkit are full of information about transit-oriented development, where TALC and other Collaborative partners are advocating for TOD in the Bay Area, and how you can be a voice for great, walkable communities in your city.

Is TOD planning happening in your city?
Is your city conducting -- or is about to conduct -- planning for a new transit oriented development (TOD)? This summer the Great Communities Collaborative will double the number of communities it is active in to a total of 14. (See www.greatcommunities.org for information about current sites.) As a first step, TALC is compiling a list of upcoming planning processes. If you know of any land use planning processes that will be starting soon for a neighborhood near an existing or planned rapid transit station, please let us know! Contact Howard Karp, Great Communities Intern, at howard@transcoalition.org or 510-740-3150 x309.
