Celebrate TALC's birthday on October 18 -- Get your tickets today!
TALC is turning ten...and you're invited to a memorable evening. Together we'll celebrate the many organizations, activists, and civic leaders who have made TALC's successes over the past ten years possible. Join us on Thursday, October 18th from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. for a casual evening of live jazz, food, drinks, a photography exhibit, and mingling at the Oakland Museum of California! A short program will include remarks from Senator Barbara Boxer and world-renowned planner and architect Peter Calthorpe. To take advantage of beautiful Bay Area fall weather, the Museum's outdoor patios and gardens will be open during the event. Join us for the low price of $45. A special rate of $25 is available for students, those affiliated with a TALC member/affiliate group, and people with limited financial means.

Help launch the Transportation Fund for Climate Protection -- Thursday, October 25
Save the date! On October 25, the Transportation and Land Use Coalition, along with our members and other partners, will release our proposal for a major new program. This program will help the Bay Area meet climate change emission goals, reduce traffic congestion, improve our public transit system, and make our communities more walkable, bikeable, and equitable. The proposal is part of TALC's platform to influence MTC's 2009 update of the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP). TALC's platform was created through a broad effort by coalition members and has already been endorsed by over 40 organizations. The location and time for the official announcement will be communicated later this month by e-mail, but we expect it to be in downtown San Francisco, probably at noon. Please join us! If your organization is interested in signing on to TALC's RTP platform, contact Carli Paine at carli@transcoalition.org or 510-740-3150 x315. If you're artistically-inclined, volunteer to help make creative costumes for the press conference announcement by contacting Ann Cheng at ann@transcoalition.org or 510-740-3150 x316.

Launch of ClimatePlan and new report on the climate/land use connection
California must embrace smart growth principles in order to achieve its ambitious targets for reducing global warming pollution. That's according to a new national report, Growing Cooler: the Evidence on Urban Development and Climate Change. The report was released locally by ClimatePlan, a new network of California environmental and planning groups, including TALC, that are working to ensure that smart land use remains a priority for implementation of California's climate law, AB 32. The report warns that if sprawling development continues to fuel growth in driving, it will overwhelm expected gains from vehicle efficiency and low-carbon fuels. The release was covered by the Los Angeles Times, Contra Costa Times, and local TV (click on "Contra Costa using BART to Combat Global Warming"). For more information visit the website below or contact Stuart Cohen at stuart@transcoalition.org.

TravelChoice hits the streets in Berkeley
TravelChoice -- TALC's innovative program to decrease auto trips by providing information and incentives to residents to shift trips to transit, biking, walking, and carpooling -- began outreach in September in South and West Berkeley. By Thanksgiving, TravelChoice will have contacted 7,500 households through phone conversations and door-to-door visits. Coming on the heels of last year's successful pilot projects in Oakland and Alameda, the Berkeley outreach introduces new elements. TravelChoice Berkeley adds car sharing to the mix of travel modes being promoted, introduces customized BART information, and will culminate in an in-depth follow-up effort six to nine months after the first outreach. TravelChoice in Berkeley is funded by the City of Berkeley, ACTIA, BART, and AC Transit. To learn more about the Berkeley project, or if you're interested in a paid position on our outreach team, contact John Knox White at john@transcoalition.org or 510-740-3150 x371.
